Every listicle on this query gives you ten apps and calls each of them excellent. They cannot all be the best SEO app for Shopify, and more usefully, they are not substitutes for each other — an image compressor and a schema generator are not competing for the same slot in your app stack.
So this guide is organised by job rather than by rank. Below: what Shopify already does free, which seven Shopify apps are worth considering and for what, and which features across all of them do nothing measurable. Every price and rating was read off each app's Shopify App Store listing on 12 September 2026 and will drift, so re-check before you install.
One framing note. The best Shopify SEO app for a 40-product store and the best one for a 4,000-product Shopify Plus store are not the same app, and no honest ranking survives that fact. There is no best overall here, and any SEO guide that names one has stopped describing your store. Apps are the last chapter of the wider Shopify SEO programme rather than the first, because they accelerate work you have already decided to do.
What Shopify gives you without any app
Start here, because it changes which apps you need.
Every product, collection, page and blog post in the Shopify admin carries a Search engine listing panel with an Edit website SEO link, and that is where the title and meta description live. Shopify generates sitemap.xml automatically, sets canonical tags on products and collections, and serves a robots.txt you can override with robots.txt.liquid. Shopify Magic will draft product descriptions on any Shopify plan.
So the free baseline covers metadata, sitemaps, canonicals and robots. What it does not cover is doing those things four hundred times at once, compressing images, generating complete structured data, finding broken links, or telling you what is wrong. That gap is the entire market. If a paid plan's headline feature is "edit your meta title", you are being sold the admin.
The mechanics of that baseline are worth twenty minutes before you spend anything: where keywords actually go on Shopify is free and is most of the result.
The seven apps, by job
Ratings and review counts as at 12 September 2026.
Smart SEO — the best free tier
Sherpas Design's app carries 5.0 stars from 953 reviews and a Built for Shopify badge, with a free plan and paid plans at $14.99, $24.99 and $49.99 a month. It covers the broadest spread at the lowest price: AI-written meta tags and alt text, image optimization, structured data, broken-link detection, sitemap and IndexNow submission.
If you want one app and a small bill, this is the one to try first. The free tier is genuinely usable rather than a demo.
SearchPie — the best single broad app
4.9 from 2,460 reviews, Built for Shopify, free Starter plan then $39 and $99 a month. SearchPie is the most complete of the all-in-ones: JSON-LD schema including breadcrumbs and FAQ, bulk metadata editing, image compression, lazy loading and minification, Google Search Console integration, IndexNow, 404 detection and sitemap management.
SearchPie is the best choice when you want SEO and store speed handled in one place and you would rather not reason about which tool owns which job.
Avada AI SEO Image Optimizer — image-heavy stores
4.9 from 4,667 reviews, the largest review count in this guide. Free plan covering 100 image optimizations and 20 on-page audits; Pro at $34.95 a month, Enterprise at $99.
Its centre of gravity is images: compression, resizing, and generated alt text at volume, plus speed work like lazy loading and minification. If your Shopify store is a fashion or homeware catalogue where pages carry twenty photographs, image optimization is your actual bottleneck, and this app helps more than any amount of metadata work will.
Yoast SEO — editorial quality
4.3 from 173 reviews, $19 a month or $190 a year, 14-day trial, no free tier. The lowest rating here, and the context matters: it arrived late to Shopify and it is the only app in this comparison with no free plan, which accounts for much of the one-star traffic.
What it gives you that the others do not is the real-time SEO analysis and readability feedback while you write, plus templates across a catalogue and access to Yoast's courses. It is the right choice when people on your team write product copy and the problem is quality rather than throughput. The full picture, including what does not carry over from the WordPress plugin, is in the Yoast breakdown.
JSON-LD for SEO — structured data, properly
4.9 from 443 reviews, $399 a year, 7-day trial. The most expensive app here and the narrowest: it does structured data and nothing else, covering products, reviews, breadcrumbs, FAQs and blogs, integrating with more than twenty review app integrations, and handling awkward cases like preorders, subscriptions and Shopify Markets.
$399 is a lot for one job. It is justified on a store where rich results carry real revenue and the theme's markup is incomplete — and worth knowing that most themes emit partial product schema that looks fine until you test it.
Plug in SEO — diagnostics
4.6 from 676 reviews, $29.99 to $79.99 a month with 7-day trials. A scanner first: it finds SEO issues across the store, flags broken links, and explains the fixes rather than silently applying them.
That framing is the reason to choose it and the reason not to. If you are new to SEO and want to understand what is wrong, it teaches. If you want the work done, a broad app does more per pound.
Tiny SEO — the lightweight option
5.0 stars, free to install with 50 optimizations a month on the free plan. Image compression, resizing and alt text, broken link and redirect management, JSON-LD schema, lazy loading and an HTML sitemap.
A sensible first app on a small store that has never had one, and the free plan is enough to see whether the paid plan would be. TinyIMG is the app most often recommended alongside it for pure image work, and occupies much the same corner of the market.
Also in the running
Two more names come up in every comparison of the best SEO apps and deserve a sentence rather than a section. SEO Manager is one of the longest-established Shopify SEO tools, built around issue detection and metadata control. Booster SEO is the volume option, aimed at merchants who want meta tags and alt text generated across a catalogue with minimal configuration. Both are credible; neither does something the seven above do not, so check their current Shopify App Store listing against the table rather than against a review.
The apps at a glance
| App | Rating (reviews) | Free plan | Paid from | Best at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart SEO | 5.0 (953) | Yes | $14.99/mo | Broad coverage, cheapest |
| SearchPie | 4.9 (2,460) | Yes | $39/mo | One app for SEO and speed |
| Avada AI SEO | 4.9 (4,667) | Yes | $34.95/mo | Images at volume |
| Yoast SEO | 4.3 (173) | No | $19/mo | Editorial analysis, templates |
| JSON-LD for SEO | 4.9 (443) | No | $399/yr | Structured data depth |
| Plug in SEO | 4.6 (676) | No | $29.99/mo | Diagnostics and teaching |
| Tiny SEO | 5.0 | Yes | Free tier upward | A small store's first app |
Two things to know before you read that table as a ranking. Review counts measure age and install base, not quality — an app four years older accumulates thousands of reviews a better new app never will. And Built for Shopify certification, which Smart SEO and SearchPie both carry, covers performance, design and support standards rather than SEO results.
What none of these apps do
The honest part, and the reason this page exists.
Keywords meta tags. Any app or guide offering to inject <meta name="keywords"> is selling you a tag Google announced it ignores in September 2009. It is not harmful. It is not anything.
SEO scores. Every app in this category shows a number out of 100. No search engine computes it, no two apps agree on it, and optimising toward one produces keyword-stuffed alt text and titles written for a scoring rubric. Use the SEO audits to find broken links and missing fields; ignore the grade.
Ranking. No app ranks you. They remove friction — absent metadata, heavy images, broken links, missing markup — which lets a page that deserves to rank do so. A thin product page with perfect technical SEO is still a thin product page, and search engine optimization on Shopify is not a thing you can buy your way out of.
Fixing the theme. SEO optimization at the template level — a missing h1, a heading structure that starts at h3, a collection page that renders its description below the product grid — is a theme job. Shopify themes vary wildly here, an app cannot rewrite yours, and no SEO app alone will surface it. That is also true of your page builder: the best Shopify page builder in the world will happily let you publish a page with no heading.
Getting you named by AI engines. Several apps now advertise AI SEO features, usually meaning generated metadata and an llms.txt file. No major answer engine has committed to reading llms.txt. Whether an AI names your store when someone asks for a recommendation depends overwhelmingly on third-party sources — reviews, forums, comparison sites — which is not a thing any app on your own store controls. What the data says about AI search on Shopify covers which half is worth your money.
How to choose the right app
Four questions, in order, and one app per job. Choosing the right SEO tool is mostly a matter of naming your bottleneck before you read any list, this one included.
How big is the catalogue? Under fifty products, skip the app and optimize your store by hand. Fifty to five hundred, a free tier will cover you. Above that, bulk editing is the feature you are buying and you should pay for the tier that does not throttle it.
What is actually slow or broken? Run PageSpeed Insights and open your sitemap. If images dominate the page weight, buy an image app. If your product pages have no schema, buy a schema app. If your titles are the raw product names, buy nothing yet and go and write them.
Who writes the copy? If it is a team, editorial analysis earns its price. If it is you alone, it does not.
Are you on Shopify Plus? A Shopify Plus store usually has multiple storefronts and a larger catalogue, which changes the maths — per-store app subscriptions add up fast, and the bulk and templating features stop being optional. That estate problem is its own piece of work.
The order that actually works
Most merchants try to boost your Shopify store with apps before doing the free work, and it is backwards. A Shopify store with apps layered over untouched titles is slower and no more visible.
Write the titles and meta descriptions on your twenty best sellers by hand. This is the part that helps every Shopify merchant and costs nothing. Fix the collection pages, which usually carry more commercial intent than the products do. Then look at what is left and buy the app that addresses it. Doing it in that order means you know which SEO tasks the app is saving you, and whether the paid plan is worth renewing in month three.
The checklist is ordered the same way, by what breaks first, and there is a tracker if you would rather record the work than remember it. If the whole store needs the sequence rather than one app, that is a Shopify SEO engagement.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best SEO app for Shopify?
There is no single best app, because the apps solve different problems. For broad coverage cheaply, Smart SEO. For SEO and speed in one app, SearchPie. For image-heavy stores, Avada. For editorial quality, Yoast. For structured data depth, JSON-LD for SEO. Choose by what is broken on your store rather than by rating.
Do I need an SEO app for Shopify?
Not under about fifty products. Shopify gives you title and meta description fields on every page type, generates the sitemap, sets canonicals and serves robots.txt free. Apps earn their place on catalogue size, image weight and schema depth.
What is the best free Shopify SEO app?
Smart SEO has the most capable free tier, covering metadata, alt text, structured data and broken links. Avada's free plan is the better choice if images are your bottleneck, and Tiny SEO's free plan is a reasonable first app on a new store.
Can I run two SEO apps at once?
Only if they do different jobs — a broad app plus a specialist is fine. Two broad apps both writing metadata and schema to the same pages produces duplicates and conflicts. If you switch, uninstall properly and check the theme for a leftover app embed.
Does the Built for Shopify badge mean an app is better at SEO?
No. It certifies performance, design and support standards against Shopify's own criteria. It is a reasonable signal that an app is well built and will not slow your store down, which is worth something, but it says nothing about SEO results.
Will an SEO app improve my rankings?
Not directly. Apps remove obstacles — missing metadata, heavy images, broken links, absent markup — so pages that deserve to rank are able to. None of them makes a thin page rank, and any app promising a ranking improvement is promising something it cannot control.
Do SEO apps help with AI search visibility?
Marginally. Structured data seems to correlate with citation, and most of these apps add some. The llms.txt files several now generate are unproven — no major engine has said it reads them. Being cited in AI answers runs mostly on third-party sources rather than on markup on your own store.
Which are the best Shopify SEO apps for 2026?
The apps in this guide — Smart SEO, SearchPie, Avada, Yoast, JSON-LD for SEO, Plug in SEO and Tiny SEO — are the ones worth comparing for Shopify in 2026. They are not interchangeable: compare the best Shopify SEO apps on the job you need done, not on a ranked list. Many SEO apps in this category overlap almost entirely, and running two at once causes problems. If you are looking for a ranked list of the best Shopify apps for 2026 across every category, this is not that guide — it covers SEO apps in 2026 only.
How much should I spend on Shopify SEO apps?
On a store under a few hundred products, nothing to start, then $15–$40 a month for one broad app if bulk editing or image weight is genuinely costing you time. Spending more than that without a specific bottleneck to point at is buying features, not results.
Where to start
Install nothing today. Open your five best-selling products and read their SEO titles.
No app on Shopify, and no Shopify agency, starts anywhere else.
If they are the raw product names with no category noun, you have found a problem no app was going to fix for you, and fixing it costs an hour. Come back to this page once that is done and you will know exactly which of the seven you need — and on a good number of stores, the answer turns out to be none of them.
