Shopify Plus SEO

The Plus-specific SEO problems, and the ones that are just SEO

Most pages ranking for shopify plus seo are a standard Shopify SEO guide with the word Plus inserted. The platform tier is not a ranking factor. What is different is architectural — and it is the architecture that decides whether an answer engine can retrieve your catalogue at all.

  • Expansion stores put one catalogue on several domains, and nothing reconciles them for you
  • Markets handles hreflang automatically inside one store — expansion stores hand that problem back
  • B2B catalogues are built for signed-in buyers, which is a retrieval problem before it is an SEO one
  • At Plus catalogue sizes, crawl budget stops being theoretical

This page is the Plus chapter of our Shopify SEO work. If you are on a standard plan, start there instead — none of the four problems below will be yours yet.

What is different on Plus

Four surfaces standard Shopify does not have

Everything else on a Plus store is ordinary Shopify SEO. These four are not, and between them they account for almost every serious problem we find on a Plus estate.

01

Expansion stores

What it is
Shopify includes your main store and nine expansion stores in the Plus plan. Merchants use them for regions, product line extensions, B2B and employee or VIP stores. Shopify is explicit that they are for the same brand — you cannot run multiple brands across them.
Where it breaks
Each expansion store is a separate store with its own products, collections and configuration. That means the same product can exist on several domains, and nothing in the platform reconciles those copies for you. Markets solves this inside one store; across stores it is yours to solve.
What to do
Decide which store owns each market, then make the relationship explicit: cross-domain hreflang, a canonical policy you can state in a sentence, and one set of URLs you are willing to defend as the primary. An audit that skips this on a multi-store estate is auditing one tenth of the problem.

02

Shopify Markets

What it is
Markets sells internationally from one store. Shopify generates hreflang tags automatically from your market and language configuration, gives each market page a self-referencing canonical tag, and puts hreflang annotations in the sitemaps.
Where it breaks
Nothing, if you use it. The failure is choosing expansion stores for internationalisation when Markets would have done, and inheriting the international seo work the platform was doing for free.
What to do
Subfolders are Shopify's recommended structure and share authority with the primary domain. Subdomains and top-level domains are supported and are stronger local signals at the cost of being treated as separate sites. Choose once, early — this is the most expensive decision on this page to reverse.

03

B2B catalogues

What it is
B2B on Plus personalises the buying experience per company: pricing, currency, the products a buyer sees, payment methods and store content, all scoped to a company profile.
Where it breaks
The catalogue a Plus merchant most wants found is frequently the one nobody logged out can see. A crawler is a logged-out visitor, and so is every AI answer engine — if your wholesale range only exists behind a company login, it does not exist as far as retrieval is concerned.
What to do
Separate the two jobs. Keep pricing and ordering behind the login where they belong, and publish a public, indexable page for each product line that states specifications, materials, MOQ policy and who it is for. That page is what gets retrieved; the login is where the transaction happens.

04

Scale

What it is
Plus catalogues are big enough that crawl budget stops being a theoretical concern and faceted collection URLs multiply faster than anyone is watching.
Where it breaks
Filter and sort parameters generate near-identical URLs at a rate proportional to your catalogue. On a large store that is where crawl goes, and it goes there instead of your new products.
What to do
Keep faceted URLs out of the index, keep them out of the sitemap, and check the coverage report rather than assuming. At this size, indexation is a monitoring job, not a one-off fix.

What is exactly the same

The plan is not a ranking factor

No search engine knows which tier you pay for. Most of the work on a Plus store is the work on any store, and any shopify plus seo proposal that treats the whole thing as special is padding. Here is the ordinary part, with the detail written out elsewhere rather than repeated:

Titles, metas and product pages

Identical to any Shopify store. Unique titles that lead with the noun a buyer searches, meta descriptions written for the click rather than the crawler, and your own product copy instead of the manufacturer's.

Product title SEO

Collection pages

The most neglected page type on any store, Plus included. A collection page matches category-plus-qualifier queries better than any product page, and on most stores it is a heading and a grid.

Collections SEO

Structured data

Populated Product and Organization markup. Presence is not the win — the one published study on schema and AI citation found presence did not predict citation, while markup with real values in the concrete fields did.

Shopify schema markup

The technical baseline

Indexation first, then Core Web Vitals read from field data in Search Console rather than a lab score, then internal linking. Interaction to Next Paint is the one most large catalogues fail.

The ecommerce SEO checklist

Who this is for

Shopify Plus brands running more than one storefront, selling into more than one market, or carrying a B2B catalogue alongside retail. If that is you, the four surfaces above are your whole seo perspective on this platform and the rest is execution.

If you are a standard Shopify store owner, this is the wrong page. The difference between Shopify and Shopify Plus, from an seo point of view, is architectural freedom you do not have yet — so nothing here applies, and the seo basics will do more for you than any of it. Our Shopify SEO page is the one to read.

Merchants come to this page wanting a shopify plus seo guide and usually need a decision instead: which store owns which market. Make that one well and most of the rest is basic seo applied carefully. Make it badly and no amount of on-page seo work recovers it.

What about speed?

Shopify speed is largely Shopify's problem, which is one of the genuine advantages of the platform — you are not tuning a server. What you control is the theme, the apps and the images, and on a Plus store the app count is usually the culprit.

Read Core Web Vitals from field data in Search Console rather than a lab score, and treat Interaction to Next Paint as the one to watch: it is the metric large catalogues fail most often, and the one most affected by scripts you installed and forgot. Speed work has a real but modest impact on seo performance — it removes a penalty rather than winning a search result.

Common problems

What we find on a Plus estate

The common shopify plus seo problems are unglamorous. Almost none of them are advanced seo — they are seo foundations left undone at a size where undone becomes expensive. The unique seo challenges of a Plus store are architectural; the rest is general seo done at scale.

  • One catalogue published across several domains with no relationship declared between the copies
  • An expansion store chosen for a job Shopify Markets would have done, and international seo inherited as a result
  • Faceted collection page URLs indexed in their thousands, absorbing the crawl meant for new products
  • A B2B catalogue invisible to anyone signed out, including every crawler and every answer engine
  • Product schema present on every page and populated on none
  • Duplicate page title and meta descriptions across regional stores selling the same range
  • Core Web Vitals read from a lab score rather than the field data in Google Search Console

Tooling

Do you need SEO apps on Plus?

Mostly not for the work, and genuinely yes for the watching. The seo features that matter on a large store are bulk editing and monitoring: finding the four hundred products with a duplicate page title, or the collection page that silently fell out of the index last month. That is what seo tools are for.

Smart SEO, Plug in SEO and the rest of the Shopify app store roughly agree on that feature set. Any shopify app here is a labour-saving device, not a strategy — none of them knows your market, your buyers or which of your collections deserves to rank, so the judgement stays with you. A green light in an app means the fields are filled, not that the page is good.

The free seo stack covers more than merchants expect. Search Console gives you indexation, coverage, Core Web Vitals field data and the queries you already appear for, and on a Plus estate you will use google search console more than any paid tool.

How we work on Plus

An estate is not a store

A single Shopify store is an audit: a fixed piece of work with a report at the end. A Plus estate rarely is. Ten storefronts, a B2B catalogue and a Markets configuration change more often than a report can keep up with, so the useful shape is continuous — architecture decided once, then monitoring and correction.

We start the same way regardless: measure whether AI answer engines name you today, audit the four surfaces above across every store rather than one, and put the technical seo baseline in order. What comes after depends on what that finds, and we quote it one to one rather than from a page.

We do not publish a price for this, and the reason is that the range is genuinely wide. Two Plus merchants on identical shopify plans can need very different seo services: one storefront with a clean catalogue is a different job from nine storefronts, a B2B catalogue and three languages.

What moves the seo cost is estate size, how many markets you sell into, whether the architecture decision has already been made, and how much of the technical baseline is already in place. What does not move it is your plan tier.

The seo value on a Plus store is usually concentrated in a small number of fixes: an architecture decision made properly, indexation brought under control, and the collection and product templates corrected once so the change lands across the whole catalogue at once. That is where strategic seo differs from a task list — the leverage is in choosing which few things to do.

There is no shortage of anyone calling themselves a Shopify Plus agency, and the honest test is narrow: ask what they would do about your expansion stores. An seo agency that answers with a keyword list has not understood the estate.

We are not going to claim we can master seo on your behalf while you watch. The seo efforts that move a Plus store are decisions about architecture, then consistent execution across templates — and the second part works better when someone in-house owns it. What an outside team is genuinely good for is the first pass, the judgement calls, and noticing the seo issues nobody looks at because nobody owns them.

The most reliable way to get better seo out of a Plus store is to optimize the templates rather than the pages: one correct collection template lands across every category at once. That is where the optimization leverage is, and it is why we start with an audit rather than a keyword list.

Which seo strategies actually pay depends on what your collection pages are already doing. A collection page is a landing page in every sense that matters to search engine optimization, and on most Plus estates it is the largest untapped source of organic traffic — ahead of anything on the product templates.

Shopify store owners on the standard plans ask us the same question and get the same answer: your store’s seo is decided by your pages, not by your plan. Everything that will improve Shopify Plus results is on this page, and seo for Shopify Plus is those four surfaces plus the ordinary work. On a single shopify plus store selling into one market, the ordinary work is nearly all of it.

Two things people expect here and will not find. Local seo, unless you run physical stores — it is a separate discipline and not a Plus feature. And ai seo sold as a bolt-on: the work that gets a catalogue retrieved by an answer engine is largely the work already described above, and anyone offering it separately should be asked which part of it does not impact seo generally.

We do not publish client names or results here. There is a version of this page with logos and a growth percentage on it, and we would have to invent both.

What the first pass covers

  • Store architecture across the estate: which store owns which market, and whether anything declares it
  • The Markets versus expansion-store decision, and whether the current one is still right
  • Duplicate catalogue exposure across domains, including canonical tag and hreflang coverage
  • B2B catalogue indexability, checked signed out
  • Indexation and crawl behaviour at your catalogue size, read from Google Search Console
  • Structured data completeness on product and collection templates
  • Whether an answer engine names you today, and which domains it cites instead

Questions

Shopify Plus SEO, answered

Does Shopify Plus rank better than standard Shopify?

No. The plan is not a ranking factor and no search engine knows which tier you pay for. What Plus gives you is architectural freedom — expansion stores, Markets, B2B, checkout control — and that freedom is what creates the SEO problems on this page. A Plus store is easier to break and easier to fix, not inherently better placed.

Should I use expansion stores or Shopify Markets for international?

Markets unless you have a reason not to. It keeps one store, generates hreflang automatically from your market and language settings, and gives each market page a self-referencing canonical. Expansion stores give you complete control over catalogue and content per region, and hand the entire international SEO problem back to you. Choose expansion stores when the catalogues genuinely differ, not when the currency does.

How do I avoid duplicate content across multiple Shopify stores?

Decide which store owns each market, then declare it. Cross-domain hreflang between the stores, a canonical policy you can state in one sentence, and no expansion store quietly publishing the same product page as the main one with no relationship declared. Shopify reconciles markets inside a store; it does not reconcile stores.

Is my B2B catalogue visible to search engines?

Usually not, and that is the point of it — B2B pricing and catalogues are scoped to signed-in companies. The consequence people miss is that a crawler and an AI answer engine are both logged-out visitors. Check your own store while signed out and see what remains. If the answer is nothing, publish public specification pages for each product line and keep the transaction behind the login.

What does a Shopify Plus SEO audit actually cover?

The same technical and on-page ground as any store, plus the four surfaces above: store architecture across the estate, the Markets or expansion-store decision, B2B indexability, and crawl behaviour at your catalogue size. On a multi-store estate, an audit of one store is not an audit.

Do I need SEO apps on Shopify Plus?

Rarely for the work itself. Apps earn their place on bulk editing across a large catalogue and on monitoring — spotting the duplicate titles or the collection that fell out of the index across ten thousand URLs. They do not know your market, so the writing stays yours.
